Position: Upstream Principal Scientist

Location: Devens - MA

The Principal Scientist will report to a Scientific Director and will collaborate with a group of Ph.D. scientists and associate scientists to develop robust and scalable mammalian cell culture processes for biologics in BMS's very robust and very exciting pipeline.

The candidate will work closely with the downstream analytical teams as well as other matrix organizations to drive speed to clinic and work with manufacturing sites within the BMS network or Third Party Manufacturing to deliver robust, scalable and economical processes for clinical and commercial supply.

The successful candidate has the following responsibilities:

* Key focus on developing/optimizing next generation cell culture media and processes using perfusion technologies. * Lead upstream process design, optimization, and tech transfer to clinical/commercial manufacturing facilities. * Prepare/review technical documents including development /tech transfer reports, batch records, SOPs and CMC regulatory submissions. * Supervise and train junior team members in lab operations. * Recommend innovative new technologies and perform the necessary experiments for evaluation and implementation. * Develop and implement molecular cell biology tools or assays to characterize cell physiology changes and correlate to cell culture performance or product quality attributes. * Occasional weekend work will be required.

Qualifications:

* PhD or Masters in Chemical/Biochemical/Biomedical Engineering, Biology or related field with minimum 2-4 or 8-10 years, respectively, of relevant industrial experience preferred. * Expertise in mammalian cell culture media development and perfusion operation. * In depth understanding and hands on experience in upstream process development, bioreactor operation and scale- up/down. * Practical experience with downstream processing or analytical techniques. * Knowledge of statistical experimental design and data analysis. * Excellent oral and written communication skills. * Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. * Capable to do comprehensive scientific literature search, write scientific manuscripts for peer reviewed journal publication/patent, and write technical reports. * Highly self-motivated and creative with minimum supervision required
